Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board to Hold Public Information Meetings for 2017-2018 French Immersion Program

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will hold a series of public information meetings in Mississauga and Brampton for parents and guardians interested in enrolling their children in the board’s French Immersion Program for the 2017-2018 school year. The information sessions are intended to provide an overview of the French Immersion Program, the criteria for admittance, and changes that can be expected from the regular program.

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board offers the French Im¬mersion Program starting in Grade 1 at eight school sites. Students registered in this program will spend 90% of their day learning in the French language. In Grades 2 and 3, 70% of the instruction will be in French, with the propor¬tion of English increasing to 50% in later years.

Students in the French Immersion Program usually attain a mid-range level of competency in the language.  This means that after at least 4,510 hours of French instruction during his/her school career, the student should be able to read newspapers and books, with the occasional help of a dictionary, as well as watch and understand radio and television news and other programs. The student should also be able to participate adequately in conversation, demonstrate knowledge of the culture, society, customs, economy, government, institutions of a French-speaking community and, after a few months’ residence, and function quite well in a French-speaking community.

Online registration will begin following the French Immersion Parent Information sessions with the deadline for submissions to be announced.  Should the number of applications exceed the number of spaces available, a centralized, computer-generated, random selection process will be held following the deadline.

More detailed information will be available at parent/guardian meetings to be held at three French Immersion locations:

Over 4,000 Grade 9 students prepare for their transition to high school

Over the next two weeks, many of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board's over 4,000 Grade 9 students will prepare for their transition to high school by participating in DPCDSB's Get Ready! for Secondary School program.

The Get Ready! for SecondarySchool program, which is a joint project between the Program and Continuing Education Departments, blends approximately 20 hours of literacy and numeracy-focused instruction with secondary school readiness activities that help welcome and prepare students for their secondary school experience.

"Ensuring the success of students as they transition from elementary to secondary school is one of the key strategies of DPCDSB's Student Success Program," said Carmel Murphy, Superintendent of Program and Learning Services. "These transition programs provide students with opportunities to feel welcome, make connections, and develop relationships with other students and Senior Peer Leaders.  Students get the opportunity to learn about their secondary school, teachers and their own personal learning styles before attending classes in September."

Grade 9 students may participate in a variety of activities during their transition program, including school tours, information sessions, motivational speakers, orientation games, picnics and barbeques. TheGet Ready! for Secondary School program eases the Grade 8 to 9 transition for students and parents alike, as their confidence, comfort level, and awareness of secondary programs and pathways are significantly amplified before they enter secondary school.

Program dates are posted on the DPCDSB website. For more information, students and parents/guardians should contact their school office.

It serves over 81,000 students in 150 schools located throughout Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and Orangeville. Continued strong EQAO reading and writing results for DPCDSB students

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has released the results of the 2017-18 annual assessments completed in Grades 3, 6, 9 and 10. The EQAO assessments and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) provide an indication of each student's achievement in reading, writing and/or mathematics at key points throughout their formal schooling.

The assessment results for elementary students report on reading, writing and mathematics at both the primary and junior levels of study. Grade 3 students participate in the primary assessments and Grade 6 students complete the junior assessments. The Grade 9 EQAO assessment focuses on mathematics achievement, while the OSSLT assesses students' proficiency in reading and writing. Successful completion of this test (or the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course) is one of the 32 requirements necessary to obtain the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

Results of the elementary EQAO assessments indicate continued high performance in terms of proportions of students meeting or exceeding the provincial standard (Levels 3 or 4) on the Grades 3 and 6 assessments of reading: almost 80% of students in Grade 3 met or exceed the standard, while 84% of students in Grade 6 achieved Level 3 or 4.

Consistent with the previous assessment year, high proportions of DPCDSB students in Grades 3 and 6 met or exceeded the provincial standard in writing.

Success rates on the 2017-18 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) for Dufferin-Peel students continue to be very high, despite a slight decline among students eligible to participate for the first time compared to the previous assessment year.

In elementary mathematics, the results indicate a decline in the proportions of both Grade 3 and Grade 6 students meeting or exceeding the provincial standard compared to the previous assessment year.

At the secondary level, the 2017-18 EQAO assessment results for Grade 9 mathematics indicate that DPCDSB students continue to demonstrate high levels of performance at the academic level of study. However, Grade 9 applied mathematics achievement has shown recent decline. Given the results in both elementary and Grade 9 EQAO mathematics assessments, the DPCDSB continues to dedicate a wide range of supports to schools to focus on improving learning in this key subject area for all students.

"As trustees, we are committed to allocating resources and supports to ensure that our students are put in the best position possible to succeed," said Mario Pascucci, Chair of the Board of Trustees. "While we are concerned about the recent trend in Mathematics, and we will look to address this, we are encouraged, overall, by this year's results. We give credit to our teachers, support staff, and administrators, under the leadership of our senior management team, for helping bring the vision of the Board of Trustees to fruition."

The 2017-18 results for DPCDSB students and the province (ON) in all six elementary EQAO assessments, the Grade 9 mathematics assessments, and the OSSLT are presented below.

Grade 9 Academic Mathematics87%84%
Grade 9 Applied Mathematics50%45%
OSSLT (First-Time Eligible)82%79%
OSSLT (Previously Eligible)51%46%

As in previous years, the DPCDSB will undertake a detailed analysis of the EQAO and OSSLT results to provide support to schools, students and parents/guardians to ensure that more students continue to improve in all assessment areas. Each school has its own plan, which will be reviewed in the context of the test results, to improve students' skills in all subject areas. School plans include strategies to assist all students, including intervention and reinforcement for students who did not achieve the provincial standard, or who were not successful on the OSSLT.

"EQAO assessments are one of the tools we use to gauge student achievement," said Marianne Mazzorato, Director of Education. "While our students continue to demonstrate strong achievement in literacy, we have work to do in the area of mathematics." Added Ms. Mazzorato, "As always, we continue to seek to improve, not only in mathematics, but in all areas.  We thank the Board of Trustees for its commitment to student achievement and well-being and for allocating and aligning the resources necessary to meet the objectives of our Multi-Year Strategic Plan."

DPCDSB and individual school results will be available on the DPCDSB website at www.dpcdsb.org later this fall. Additional information on the various assessments can be obtained through the EQAO website at www.eqao.com
